The newest product of Nintendo, the Wii, is more than just your ordinary console. In fact, it separates itself from other counterparts, such as Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. First of all, it doesn’t involve any touch pads where you can lay your thumbs on. There’s no need to maneuver any joystick. All you have is a controller, which is very easy to manipulate.

But more than anything, the greatest benefit of the Wii lies on the fact that it can actually develop a person positively, by improving his emotional, physical and emotional aspects.

The Ultimate Difference in Movements

If you have been an active gamer for such a long time, perhaps it has become customary for you to become a couch potato, while majority of the exercise happens in your thumb. This, however, is the total opposite of the Wii. Because the real motion comes from the controller itself, you basically have to perform the movements in order for you to play the game. Even though the game is virtual, the physical efforts you give to every game are definitely real.

That’s why numerous medical researchers and players believe that Wii can help them lose great amount of weight. In the January issue of Mayo Clinic’s Pediatrics, a study states that a child who plays Wii can burn up to three times the calories compared to when he plays the standard hand=held games. This is because instead of sitting down, they are forced to stand up and perform the movements, hence burning more calories. Wii then becomes a perfect partner against obesity in children. What’s more, the game is highly entertaining. Definitely, they wouldn’t desire to put their Wii down.

The Role of Wii in Therapy

A team in Toronto University is currently studying the use of video games in therapy, particularly for children that are suffering from hemiplegic cerebral palsy. The child experiences partial paralysis in his body. If the patient can get to use his weaker side more often, then surely, he can improve his motor skills. Video games such as those of Wii can help achieve that. Moreover, it makes easier for doctors and therapists to convince parents and patients to continue the therapy even if they’re outside of the medical facility.

Coping Mechanisms with Wii

Wii can also help patients cope with stress, anxiety, and depression. A cancer patient in California has found great refuge and self-esteem, simply by playing Wii. It has helped her cope with the demands of her breast cancer. Furthermore, it gives her time to spend with her children. The interaction, entertainment, fun, and thrill are things mentally incapacitated persons can benefit from Nintendo Wii.

The marketing department of Nintendo believes that more than physical development, Wii can help foster mental aptitude as well as agility, which they cannot definitely achieve from any other hand-held console. So if you want to combine entertainment with physical and mental alertness, get on with the Wii. Or else, you may be missing a lot of things.
