How to Have A Console Party

The holidays are upon us. Different families may have their own rituals and preferences in terms of the act of celebration, but for gamers, a console party is the ultimate bash.

The concept is simple. The thing about gaming is that if you have lots of people over, one console is never, ever enough. So first of all, in order to do this you need friends with consoles, so they can bring them over. If you know people who are into console gaming, some of them undoubtedly have a console or two. In order to keep things diverse, you should have separate consoles with different games at the party.

An ideal collection(and one I recommend) would be to get an Xbox 360, another of any of the three consoles, and specifically a Wii, and all the controllers needed. Then, get Halo 3 going on the Xbox 360, either Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero World Tour on whatever console you choose, and Super Smash Brother Brawl on the Wii. The multiplayer action in Halo 3 and Brawl should keep you and others engaged for hours. Also, not only will the music game on the other console engage those playing, but it will provide a varying musical atmoshpere made up of some of the best rock songs ever released.

Over the years, there have been alternative variants on the Console Party. For an example, see the “Party Console Party.”

For example, if you are more partial to party games when it comes to parties, well, it’s a free country. But if that’s what you want, you’re probably not going to get it on the current Xbox 360 or PS3, as there are virtually no good party games on either console. For that sort of thing the Wii is the right place, with unprecedented, highly-rated and darn well established party games like WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, and Rayman Raving Rabbids.

Or perhaps you’re hoping for an all-out shooter party. The Xbox 360 and PS3 may have fantastic graphics, but when it comes shooter control schemes, nothing paralells the Wii. For four-multiplayer shooting action on the Wii, Medal of Honor: Vanguard is a viable option.

Lastly, when it comes to food, I would definately recommend soda pop, chips, and pizza, as it’s the kind of meal you can eat whilst doing other things at the same time; like playing videogames. But if you want to go that road, I strongly advise that napkins be readily available as well. Otherwise, people are quite liable to get grease all over the gaming controllers. Not a cool situation.
