For the past week or so the web has been on fire with rumors and speculation about Nintendo’s new console, currently being referred to by some by its alleged code-name “Project Cafe” and others by its rumored final name of “Stream.” Especially now that the company has itself acknowledged the system’s existence and pointed to a giant E3 2011 unveil. It’s no surprise that people are insanely excited about Nintendo’s Wii successor — so far sources have indicated that the system will be more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3 (finally, Nintendo games in glorious HD!), and it will have a brand new control mechanism in the form of a touch-screen controller with a camera, eight buttons and two analog sticks. The system will also be backward compatible with Wii games — dare I speculate (or at least dream) that it will also up-res them to full HD

My Take: The Real Reason People Should Get Excited About Nintendo’s New Console
Since the story first broke (props to Game Informer on that!), there’s been no shortage of rumors that have popped up about the Wii’s successor. Nintendo thankfully confirmed the news today and put an end to the speculation about whether a new console announcement was really coming at E3. Now that we know it definitely is coming and that everyone will be able to go hands-on with it, it’s time to start speculating about just which rumors are accurate.

Without commenting on any of the specifics we’ve been hearing about, Nintendo confirmed the existence of its new console and an impending E3 reveal earlier today. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has since talked about the system and explained one of the reasons for it coming so soon. “It became difficult for developers to surprise customers with the current Wii,” Iwata explained, according to Kyodo News (as translated by Andriasang ).

As part of its financial update today, Nintendo formally addressed the rumors of its next console, currently rumored to be code-named “Project Cafe.” The new machine is indeed official — and it’s coming in 2012. According to Nintendo’s statement, the unnamed Wii successor will be revealed at this year’s E3 show in June, where it will also be playable.

Update: Sony now says it turned off PSN Wednesday night as a result of an “external intrusion.” What was written below was based on the assumption that the downtime was not due to an attack, which obviously changes things. Original Story: Anonymous says it’s not responsible for the current PlayStation Network outage we’re experiencing. Assuming that’s true, I don’t find myself agreeing with the argument that gamers have no right to complain simply because the service is free

Should you still be doubting that a new Nintendo console is on the way, Shigeru Miyamoto has essentially admitted that such a device is in the works and it’s only a matter of time before it’s officially announced. Speaking in London this week, Edge reports that Miyamoto was asked about the recent rumors. “Don’t ask!” he responded

Wii 2 Announcement Only a Matter of Time, Says Miyamoto
It would be a bit unusual and potentially confusing to have two types of controllers available for Nintendo’s new console. It’s the potential price , though, that seems to be the most surprising aspect of the newest batch of rumors. Being the cheapest console certainly wasn’t the primary reason for the Wii becoming the best-selling system this generation

Today in Gaming – 4/21/11: The Nintendo Stream and Tanooki Suit is Back
Project Café may be the code name of Nintendo’s next console but “Stream” is rumored to be one of the names in consideration for the final product. New details being reported by IGN besides the possible name include its internal components — it will carry a “revamped” AMD R700 GPU and a triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset with faster speeds than those of the Xbox 360′s processor — and its Xbox 360-like size. The system will resemble a modern-day Super Nintendo and, based on the estimated costs to produce it, could cost between $350 and $400
