Today in Gaming – 4/25/11: Nintendo Confirms New System, 3.61 Million 3DSes Sold

Since the story first broke (props to Game Informer on that!), there’s been no shortage of rumors that have popped up about the Wii’s successor. Nintendo thankfully confirmed the news today and put an end to the speculation about whether a new console announcement was really coming at E3. Now that we know it definitely is coming and that everyone will be able to go hands-on with it, it’s time to start speculating about just which rumors are accurate.

Today in Gaming – 4/22/11: PSN Outage and EA Sports Subscription

Update: Sony now says it turned off PSN Wednesday night as a result of an “external intrusion.” What was written below was based on the assumption that the downtime was not due to an attack, which obviously changes things. Original Story: Anonymous says it’s not responsible for the current PlayStation Network outage we’re experiencing. Assuming that’s true, I don’t find myself agreeing with the argument that gamers have no right to complain simply because the service is free

Today in Gaming – 4/21/11: The Nintendo Stream and Tanooki Suit is Back

It would be a bit unusual and potentially confusing to have two types of controllers available for Nintendo’s new console. It’s the potential price , though, that seems to be the most surprising aspect of the newest batch of rumors. Being the cheapest console certainly wasn’t the primary reason for the Wii becoming the best-selling system this generation

Nintendo’s New Console Could Cost $400 and Have Two Distinct Controllers

Project Café may be the code name of Nintendo’s next console but “Stream” is rumored to be one of the names in consideration for the final product. New details being reported by IGN besides the possible name include its internal components — it will carry a “revamped” AMD R700 GPU and a triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset with faster speeds than those of the Xbox 360′s processor — and its Xbox 360-like size. The system will resemble a modern-day Super Nintendo and, based on the estimated costs to produce it, could cost between $350 and $400

Sonic Joins Mario for the London Olympics on Wii, 3DS

A new Sonic game for Wii was curiously absent when Sega recently unveiled Sonic Generations . The newly-announced Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games won’t exactly fill that hole, though it will mark Sonic’s reappearance on the Wii and his debut on the 3DS. On 3DS the game will feature more than 50 unspecified Olympic events and multiplayer support

Today in Gaming – 4/20/11: Mario 3DS This Year and New Consoles in 2014?

To some extent I’m saddened to hear that the PSP Go is officially being phased out . I was very excited when it was first announced and picked one up as soon as it was released, only to have the reality sink in. I could do without being able to trade or sell my games, and even not having access to the PSP’s entire catalog of games didn’t kill it for me.

FTC Finds Game Ratings More Strictly Enforced Than Movies and Music

Mature-rated games are significantly more difficult to purchase for underage shoppers than similarly-rated music, DVDs, and movie tickets. Only 13% of customers under 17 were able to purchase Mature-rated games in the United States during 2010 according to an annual undercover survey by the Federal Trade Commission. The 2009 figure for videogames of 20% was better than other forms of entertainment, and the 7% drop is pretty substantial given how low it was to begin with.
