$60 Games an "Exploitative" Business Model

The traditional way gamers are used to buying their games — dropping $60 and then determining if it’s something they like — isn’t a fair method in the mind of Easy Studios general manager Ben Cousins. In fact, he says it’s a “really harsh business model” and is “exploitative.” Easy Studios is the developer behind EA free-to-play games Battlefield Heroes , Battlefield Play4Free , Lord of Ultima , and Battleforge . So naturally Cousins is a proponent of that particular model, which allows gamers to try out games with no risk before determining if it’s something they want to invest money in.

All NGP games are expected to be available in both digital and physical formats following the system’s release, but an important detail is whether or not those two options will be out on the same day. Survival Requires an Expansion of Core Audience, Says Insomniac

Ratchet & Clank and Resistance developer Insomniac Games announced earlier this week that it was opening a new division , Insomniac Click, dedicated to web and mobile games. The company is clearly intent on expanding — it entered a publishing partnership with EA Partners last year, breaking a 16-year run of PlayStation exclusive. CEO Brian Hastings has now explained that its move into the social/mobile space is due in part to the core gaming audience not growing as it needs to.

Today in Gaming – 3/17/11: Kinect Helps the Blind, Madden Lockout Concerns

It’s strange to think that there might not be an NFL season later this year due to the lockout. Of course, Madden NFL 12 will be there to fill the hole to some extent. But if you had thought the game could benefit from a lack of football (making Madden the only place for fans to get their fix), you’re terribly wrong as far as Michael Pachter is concerned

Today in Gaming – 3/16/11: NGP Price, Hitman 5

It seems crazy to me that review scores could have a major effect on a videogame company, and yet that appears to be what we’re seeing with Homefront and THQ. Apparently in reaction to lower review scores than had been anticipated, the company’s stock value dropped significantly overnight, prompting THQ to publicly announce the game’s day one sales figures. It would seem the damage has already been done, as THQ stock closed out the day $1.29 less than it ended on Monday, prior to the game’s release and before the full slate of reviews were published.
